Meaning and Basic Pattern

The Korean possessive particle connects two nouns to show ownership, association, origin, or another close relationship.

Basic pattern
Possessor + 의 + Possessed or Related Noun
  • 민수의 책 = Minsu's book
  • 한국의 수도 = the capital of Korea
  • 학교의 이름 = the school's name

The possessor comes first. Korean keeps this order whether English uses apostrophe-s or “of.”
