Korean Location Particles:
에 vs 에서 Explained Simply
📍
Both and 에서 can be translated as “at” or “in,” but they do different jobs. The easiest way to choose is to look at the verb: use for existence, destination, or a specific time, and use 에서 for an action location or starting point.

Korean particles attach directly to nouns. For location expressions, the particle is selected according to the meaning of the sentence and especially the verb—not according to whether the noun ends in a consonant.

The Core Difference: 에 vs 에서

Point, Destination, or Time

Use when a place is where someone or something exists, where movement is directed, or when marking a specific time.

집에 있어요.
I am at home.

학교에 가요.
I go to school.

에서

Action Place or Starting Point

Use 에서 when an activity happens at a location or when a place is the origin of movement.

카페에서 공부해요.
I study at a café.

미국에서 왔어요.
I came from the United States.

Part 1: The Particle 에

1. Static existence with 있다 or 없다

Use to mark where a person or thing exists. The most common verbs are 있다 (to exist, to be located) and 없다 (to not exist, to not be present).

  • 집에 있어요. — I am at home.
  • 고양이가 의자에 있어요. — The cat is on the chair.
  • 지갑이 가방에 없어요. — The wallet is not in the bag.

2. Destination with movement verbs

Use for the destination of verbs such as 가다 (to go), 오다 (to come), and 다니다 (to attend or commute regularly).

  • 학교에 가요. — I go to school.
  • 친구가 한국에 와요. — My friend comes to Korea.
  • 회사에 다녀요. — I commute to a company / I work for a company.

3. Specific time

also marks a specific time: 3시에 (at 3 o’clock), 월요일에 (on Monday), and 7월에 (in July).

General relative time words such as 오늘 (today), 내일 (tomorrow), and 어제 (yesterday) normally do not take .

Part 2: The Particle 에서

1. Location where an action happens

Use 에서 when an action such as studying, eating, working, buying, exercising, or meeting happens in a place.

  • 도서관에서 공부해요. — I study at the library.
  • 식당에서 밥을 먹어요. — I eat at the restaurant.
  • 카페에서 친구를 만나요. — I meet a friend at a café.

2. Starting point or origin

With movement verbs, 에서 can mean “from” and mark the place where movement begins.

  • 미국에서 왔어요. — I came from the United States.
  • 집에서 출발해요. — I leave from home.

At-a-Glance Comparison

Particle Main function Common verbs Typical meaning
Existence, destination, specific time 있다, 없다, 가다, 오다, 다니다 at, in, to, on
에서 Action location, starting point 먹다, 공부하다, 일하다, 만나다, 사다 at, in, from
Fast decision rule:
Ask, “Is the person or thing simply there, or moving toward the place?” → use .
Ask, “Is an activity happening there, or does movement start there?” → use 에서.

Important nuance: 살다

With 살다 (to live), both 서울에 살아요 and 서울에서 살아요 are commonly used. The first can emphasize Seoul as the place of residence, while the second can present Seoul as the setting in which one lives. Beginners can safely learn both as natural.

어디에 있어요? asks where someone or something is located. 어디에서 일해요? asks where the action of working happens.
